Prelimininary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

As we can see this is a college magazine which can appeal to both male and female audience, I can say this because of the colours used; blue, red, black and white. But its looks to be set for a female audience more than a male audience. The masthead in red symbolises the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love and it is often used to bring text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect color for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. In advertising, red is often used to evoke erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, 'Lady in Red', etc
). As we can see this lady in red is trying to promote a positive point also there is use of blue which may symbolise the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. The blue says many things one of them are this also can be read by males. Also the black writing we see may symbolise mystery and truth 'The truth behind legal drug'.

The Costume, used for the lady is very eye grabbing and helps the reader understand what is yet to come in the magazine. Also the colours she wears are very important as they have meaning e.g. the blue shorts she is wearing is dark blue which is masculine colour and is excepted by many males.

The setting is says a lot as it is green and makes the reader feel relaxed, gives the reader a sense of nature, harmony and freshness. The green also helps the reader to know its educational.

The lady on the front cover is smiling so definitely means this magazine has happy moments
Anchorage, I would say the Masthead helps the images and also because it is in red will give the reader an idea what s/he is yet to read.

The masthead is recognisable and unique and eye catching, at first you would think it only appeals to a female audience.

Dateline
The main image is the lady who is in red and blue which again portrays to the reader that the magazine is friendly.
The cover lines are short and catchy and make you want to find out more thats why they are written in blue and black. The main cover lines are written slightly bigger than the cover lines which again grabs the readers attention. Standard barcode used by retailer, again at the side of the barcode there is colour blue which may symbolise a male put this magazine together.

Induction: Movie Poster Textual Analysis

In this task we had to analyse this movie poster (Connotations, denotations, Mis en Scene, Anchorage and setting).
In this film it acknowledges its star Harrison Ford's age by being set in 1957, by what Harrison Ford is wearing it doesn't look modernised into the 21st century also the carving around the cover is something you wouldn't really find these days unless you were an architect. I have not watched Indiana Jones before but i assume from the front cover he is some sort of architect adventurer. He also looks like a realistic hero.

It is very rare to see a hero holding a whip though ?this could mean the whip is very important to him and is key part of his identity which he uses very well and also symbolises physical contact is yet to happen. His side bag shows us he is definitely an adventurer and inside his side bag could include items such as water tooth brush etc, he also carries a gun which doesn't seem like he uses much but is used it in less significant situations.

His left fist is clenched this immediately shows the audience its action time and probably means his back for business as I researched this is the fourth film; he might have left some unfinished business left from the previous movie. He also has a firm and strong standing pose, he looks as if he just finished a mission or could be just starting a mission. It is no coincidence he is standing in front of a skull of fire which could symbolise life or death situations, also the use of lighting is a mixture of low key lighting and high key lighting showing us this film could be shown to the younger audience the font also shows us we will see little comedic parts, as it looks cartoonish and the colour the font is in could represent danger because it is orangey yellow(flamed colour).

On the other hand, the font looks more family friendly.

Induction: Re-Creation of a Movie Magazine Front Cover

This was my first time using Photoshop, I found it tricky to begin with but then I started to get the hang of it and started to enjoy using Photoshop. I learnt several things such as making new layers, effects of fonts and many other things. Tools included me using the grid, colour picker tool, drop shadows, outer glow. I used different fonts to match the original magazine cover.

I also used the word tool which allowed me to get the font as close as possible to the original piece. I used the move tool to get the words into the right positions, I also used the horizontal type mask tool.

To begin with I thought this was impossible, but now this has given me a clearer and better understanding of how toi compose a magazine cover and it was also ineresting to use. Using photoshop has given me more confidence to use it again.
